Adopting Party agreed that it can not transfer custody of the dog to anyone other than Rescue and agrees to return the dog to Rescue if ever unable to keep the dog.
Adopting Party agrees to exercise normal care in maintaining the health of this dog, as defined below:
1. Adopting Party will not remove the double dew claws on the rear feet of the dog or dock tails or ears, if applicable.
2. Adopting Party will maintain this dog on a proper diet and at a weight sensible for its size and age. Adopting Party will provide fresh food, fresh water, and plenty of exercise daily.
3. Adopting Party will provide routine preventative care which includes:
a. Annual physical examinations by a licensed veterinarian.
b. Annual vaccinations against DHLPP and Rabies
c. Annual fecal examinations and heartworm screenings
d. Bordetella vaccinations are recommended by veterinarians if you board your Pyr or visit dog parks.
e. Lyme disease vaccinations as recommended by your veterinarian.
f. Monthly Heartworm preventative used all year long in areas where heartworm is an issue and for at least 6 months after arrival in areas where it is not an issue. All Texas non positive HW Pyrs adopted outside of Texas must be on HW preventative for at least 6 months. All HW positive Pyrs must remain on Heartworm preventative for life.
4. Adopting Party will provide regular grooming of the coat to prevent excessive matting. Adopting Party will also keep nails neatly trimmed, and provide proper care for the ears and skin.
Adopting Party agrees to always keep this dog within a fenced yard (not on a chain) or supervised on a leash; Adopting Party agrees to never leave this dog outside when no one is home, to never allow the dog to be tied to a doghouse or to a chain, nor left unsupervised in a yard for extremely long periods thus resulting in the dogs possible digging, climbing out, or barking endlessly.
The use of Electric/Shock/Prong collars are not permitted. Adopting Party agrees to not use any electric/shock/prong collar on the dog.
Adopting Party agrees to provide updates to Rescue on the dog’s progress. We agree to contact Rescue immediately if any behavior concerns surface. We want to know how you and the dog are doing. We love pictures and would like to see them regularly.
Adopting Party agrees to have personal identification (personal I.D. tag & License tags) on said dog at all times and to regularly check the tightness of any collar. Adopting Party agrees to list Great Pyrenees Rescue Society, Inc. as an auxiliary contact with the microchip company if the dog is microchipped. If the dog is lost, we can help if we are listed as a contact. This happens from time to time.
I have been advised of the heartworm status of my adopted dog. I understand that if my adopted dog is HW positive that I must also sign the "HW+ Slow-Kill Treatment” protocol contract and the Rescue will supply all medications for my adopted dog until my dog tests HW negative. I understand I am responsible for the cost of testing until my dog is HW negative. If my adopted dog is not HW positive at this time, but tests HW positive in the future, then I agree to immediately contact the Rescue to begin the "HW+ Slow Kill Treatment Protocol". I also understand that it is my responsibility to keep my adopted dog on monthly heartworm prevention medication.
Adopting Party agrees to always transport this dog in a safe manner and never loose in the open bed of a pick-up truck or in any other unsafe manner.
The typical characteristics and temperament of the dog have been explained to me.
I have been advised that the dog can sometimes dig, chew, soil, and exhibit other undesirable traits unless properly supervised, confined, and trained. Proper training is a must. I agree to attend at least one series of organized training class.
I have been advised that this dog may have been neglected, mistreated, or abused and that special care or precautions may be required.
I have been advised that this dog will need time to adjust to new routines, new family and new surroundings. This adjustment period may be anywhere from a few days to several months. In addition, I am aware that the dog may need training in basic house manners. I agree to give Rescue 2 weeks to make arrangements for the dog if unable to give the dog time to adjust.
I agree to carefully introduce the new dog to the existing dogs and cats. Coming to a new home is stressful for the new dog and your existing animals. Careful introduction is a must. Your new dog needs time and space to adjust to the surroundings and your existing animals need to feel they are not being replaced or crowded. Introducing the new dog can result in growling, barking, submissive urination or other undesirable behavior. Properly managing the introductions is therefore important. I agree to read the documentation sent to me "Your New Rescue Dog" to make the transition easier for the dog and your family.
I understand that interactions between my child(ren) and the new dog must be carefully supervised. Any dog in Rescue is carefully screened, but dogs are dogs and unpredictable on occasion and especially in new surroundings. I agree that I will never leave my child alone and unsupervised with the dog as I realize that one mistake on my part can result in injury and in the dog never having a home.
Are you Adopting a Puppy 13 Months or Younger?
I understand and agree that it is my responsibility to make sure that the puppy I am adopting does not grow up to be aggressive.
I will commit to socializing my puppy by taking him/her out to meet strangers and interact with both other humans and dogs, to ensure that he/she does not become aggressive.
I understand that large breed puppies can develop joint issues from over-exercising, and I commit to NOT take my puppy jogging, running or difficult hiking until his growth plates have stopped growing (at around 12 months old). I understand that doing these activities can increase the risk of OCD (shoulder), elbow, knee and hip issues. I commit to taking my puppy on walks and allowing playtime with other friendly dogs as appropriate outlets for puppy energy.
I commit to registering for and/or completing a puppy obedience training course within the first 3 months of adopting my puppy.
I will NOT overfeed my puppy to "see how big he/she can get" and risk my puppy's joint health. I understand that large breed puppies can have joint issues if they grow too fast, and I agree to keep my puppy lean (on the thin side), while feeding large breed puppy appropriate food, until at least 12 months old to give them the best start with joint health. If I have questions about feeding, I understand that I can reach out to my Adoption Counselor for advice and help.
I am committed to learning about large breed puppies, specifically the Great Pyrenees breed, and will stay in contact with the Rescue to work on any behavior issues before they become serious issues.
I understand and agree that it is my responsibility to have my newly adopted dog seen for a wellness vet check within 7 days of adoption. Any previously unknown major medical conditions that are found during this wellness check will be reported immediately to the Great Pyrenees Rescue Society, Inc. At this time, I will be permitted to return the dog and receive a full refund of all adoption expenses, or I will return the dog and be offered the opportunity to adopt a different dog from the Rescue. If I choose to keep the dog after the 7 day period, with or without a vet wellness check, I acknowledge that I am releasing the Rescue from liability for future medical expenses, and I am waiving the opportunity for refund or exchange from the Rescue.
Every effort is made to make sure that any dog that is placed in Rescue is thoroughly evaluated for its temperament, health, physical soundness and overall adoptability, before it is ever offered up for adoption. However, Rescue cannot and does not guarantee the health or temperament of said dog, has no documentation on the actual breed unless otherwise provided or lineage of the rescued dog, and costs for medical care after placement are the responsibility of the Adopting Party(s). We strongly encourage you to consider insurance for your new dog. I acknowledge this and agree.
It is further agreed that if the Adopting Party fails to perform any of those acts which he/she has guaranteed to perform, that the Rescue may, at its option, revoke this agreement and retake possession of the dog with the Adopting Party forfeiting further right to the dog. Adopting Party(s) agrees to hold harmless and release Rescue and/or its members, volunteers and other individuals working for and/or assisting Rescue from all liability, claims, and/or causes of action arising from any acts, injury and/or occurrences engaged in and/or caused by the dog subject to this agreement, as well as indemnification for damages, court costs, and/or attorney's fees incurred by the Rescue and/or its members for any court proceedings relating to such matters.
Adoption Fee Paid is NON REFUNDABLE.
See Petfinder or Adoption Counselor for adoption fee.
